Annandale's History

Annandale’s history can be traced to 1685 when Col. William H. Fitzhugh purchased a tract of 24,000 acres known as Ravensworth. From that pre-Revolutionary time to now, Annandale has been known for its hospitality. A large diverse population has gathered in Annandale adding layer upon layer of charm, culture and sensational food.

As reported in the July 2009 edition of the Chamber’s news magazine, ENDEAVOR, an Inventory of Historic Sites was established by Fairfax County in 1969. Annandale has six properties on the Inventory. Most are well known to Annandale residents as they have been long integrated into our modern life and in continual use. Also listed on the Inventory are twentieth-century sites such as Holmes Run Acres off Gallows Road and Holly Hill on Statecrest Drive.  Additional articles about Annandale's History and Historic sites will be added regularly to this section.
