Home Instead Senior Care
Making Annandale a Better Place for Seniors

Family caregivers whether a spouse, son, daughter, sister, brother or friend often find themselves stressed out when helping a person near and dear to their heart.  How do you figure out where to turn when that situation arises?  Who can help take some of this pressure from you and respectfully care for your loved one?  The answer…Home Instead Senior Care.

Home Instead Senior Care, located at 7058 Columbia Pike here in Annandale, serves seniors wherever they call home.  Opening in early 2006, Home Instead Senior Care has sought to help support individuals and families remain in their home for as long as they wish.  Owned by Jason Sager, Annandale was selected due to its welcoming nature and location in Fairfax County.  Over the years Home Instead Senior Care has developed itself to be one of best senior serving organizations in the area.  Located next to Silverado’s Restaurant, the retail location gives the public the opportunity to walk in and see what we do for the community.

As a state licensed home care agency, we provide services such as companionship, to those that are lonely, light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, medication reminders, and organization for all those who struggle with day to day tasks.  In addition to these services, Home Instead Senior Care also supports those who need help with activities of daily living by providing personal care services.  This includes bathing, grooming, dressing and eating for anyone dealing with limitations.  In addition, Home Instead Senior Care can also provide transportation to doctor’s appointments, trips to the salon/barber, or just to get out and about on a beautiful day.

In order to provide these services, Home Instead Senior Care employs and trains caregivers to serve most clients in their home.  All caregivers must possess a clean background check as well as pass a drug screen prior to employment. This allows Home Instead Senior Care to ensure their clients that all employees are safe and knowledgeable about the services we will provide.  In addition to general knowledge of providing care and support, Home Instead Senior Care also provides a specialized training for those facing Alzheimer’s, Dementia, or Hospice Services in their home.  Supporting the employees and families we serve is a team of 10 individuals within the office and more than 250 caregivers throughout Southern Fairfax County.  Home Instead Senior Care is there to answer questions, find solutions to care needs, and keep the care solutions current.

We are not here to make someone dependent on others but only to assist with what is needed and highlight the independence that they hold dear.  If you or a loved one are ever in need of support or have any questions about care, simply call our office at 703-750-6644, our phones are answered 24 hours a day seven days a week. We would also welcome you to stop into our office when you are out and about in the community.  We offer free care consultations in your home, in our office or wherever you may need to meet, at Home Instead Senior Care…to us it is personal.

Renaissance of Annandale
Memory Care Community

Renaissance of Annandale, a Premier Memory Care Community opened May 1, 2019, and is thrilled to be serving Fairfax County through their innovative, state-of-the-art community. Renaissance of Annandale is located at 7112 Braddock Road.

Renaissance is the result of years of research exploring the latest trends in Alzheimer’s facilities construction, design and care with the desire to enhance the care for those who battle the storms of Alzheimer’s and memory related disorders.

At the recent ribbon cutting, Barry Ray, CEO of Legacy Senior Living stated, “ We are thankful to now be opening our doors, and blessed to be serving the greatest generation of Fairfax County. Lots of thought has gone into the planning and development of Renaissance.  But, while the building is great, the most important things are the residents and our team that serves.”

From an interior design perspective, the community is furnished with mid-century furniture that looks to be from the 1950s to remind residents of a familiar and happy time in their life. In addition to the mid-century furniture, the wall colors are selectively chosen from a 1950’s General Motors color wheel to match color palettes from the same era. Also, to recreate memories for the residents, the hallways are covered with black and white nostalgic art from local historical buildings, roads and schools from the Fairfax County area.  These photos are part of the nostalgic collection provided by the Annandale  Chamber of Commerce.  Thank you-Chamber of Commerce!

Each apartment is uniquely designed with the memory care resident in mind. Dutch doors, serving as the main entrance to each apartment room, were intentionally chosen to allow caregivers the opportunity to check on residents without disrupting them. A shadow or memory box is at each doorway to allow families to showcase photos and memorabilia of their loved one while better helping the resident locate their room. Large six-foot windows in each room provide extra light for the resident while the nine-foot ceilings enhance the space.  The flooring in each room is specifically designed to assist with slip resistance.   Even the toilet has something special---the seat is professionally painted a bright color by a NASCAR paint shop to provide an extra amount of contrast to assist the resident.

All of the common spaces were designed to create a sense of community and socialization with large windows providing lots of natural light. The dining room parallels a 1950s diner while the main activities space is decorated like a town theater. In fact, the theater was designed and built to resemble The State Theatre on N. Washington Street in Falls Church. A Town Clinic mimicking an old town doctor’s office is the centerpiece of care and services.

In addition to the design features at Renaissance of Annandale, technology is also used to enhance the care and services of the resident. The community uses an electronic storyboard called SimpleC to provide non-drug therapy to enhance and manage residents’ cognitive and behavioral needs.  The life enrichment team works with each family to gather stories, pictures and these memories can be viewed  on electronic tablets to help residents recapture moments from their past. SimpleC provides multiple types of non-drug therapies such as Reminiscence Therapy, Time and Place Therapy and Music Therapy.

Lastly, a  Circadian Rhythm lighting system emulates the color and light of the sun rising in the morning, shining throughout the day and setting in the evening.  This lighting system is intended to help the human clock for better sleep cycles.  Technologies like SimpleC and the Circadian Rhythm lighting system assist to provide the highest level of care for the memory care resident.

“Our heart is for serving seniors, and we put purpose into every decision from a simple detail like the colors on the wall to the technology and care in our life enrichment programs, our goal is to make a difference in the lives of our residents each and every day,” said Pam Phillips, executive director of Renaissance of Annandale.

Demaine Funeral Home
Celebrating the Lives of Loved Ones

The Demaine Funeral Home would like to take this opportunity to say how grateful we are to be a part of the Greater Annandale community! We are honored to have been able to care for our neighbors for over 50 years.

Our mission to make sure that every life is well celebrated, and we want to help every family tell their story. In our newly renovated facility, we have more ways than ever to do just that: rooms with modern flair that are flexible in layout to accommodate large or small gatherings, your favorite music, pictures and video on beautiful high-definition televisions in every room, catered receptions on-site, and our event coordinator to ensure even the smallest details are attended to.

Come to us with confidence knowing we can assist with every type of service. We have relationships with local churches and cemeteries, can use our network to assist families in planning services in any state in the country, and are well-versed in international shipping rules and regulations. Our staff is dedicated to assisting the families of our local veterans as well, and can help easily navigate military services, honors, and VA benefits.

There is no greater gift that can be given to provide peace-of-mind to those you love than pre-planning with us! Too often we sit down with family members who didn’t have the conversation to talk about what they wanted, and it leaves a lingering sense of unease when you cannot be certain you made the decision they would have made.

Taking the time to sit down with one of our pre-planning specialists, can take the burden of uncertainty from your spouse and your children. Putting down your wishes allows them to spend their time in remembrance and loving reflection, not filled with doubt about the decisions that were made.

Pre-planning can also take away financial burdens. With payment options to fit any budget, we can customize not only the services you would choose, but how you pay for them over time. Costs are locked in once paid, accounting for generous savings when compared with future costs. Imagine the relief you can provide those left behind!

It has been our honor to serve the families of the Greater Annandale area, and we are dedicated to continuing this at the very highest level. We thank you for the trust you place in us each and every day.

An Active Real Estate Market for Seniors
Pat Sawhney, ReMax 100 Realator specializes in Senior Sales

What a great prelude to an active Fall Market this year.  Recently, I helped a client who was hoping to "age in place" but the time had come to move to a retirement community.  With her children's help she chose Aarondale, although other excellent facilities such as Beverly Assisted Living are also available. When the  children contacted me I immediately met with them and their mother to decide how best to prepare her Annandale house for marketing.

We decided it was best to sell "as is" and let the new buyer do the renovations to their liking and in their own time as the house was totally habitable.  The minor preps suggested were to paint the living, dining and hallway walls only, have the carpets cleaned and, above all, declutter the entire house and clean it.  I organized this process with the benefit of a moving company which also does light cleaning, a painter for the walls, and a Chem Dry cleaner for the carpet (under which were hardwood floors).

All the work was quickly accomplished and on the market within 3 weeks.  On Friday the listing went live in the Bright MLS and by Monday we had 2 written offers and one verbal.  By Tuesday we selected one offer, which was cash, and went to closing after 2 weeks.  My client and her children are so pleased with my assistance and continue to say what a great service I did for them and their Mom!  To me, the rewards of helping someone this way are mutually beneficial as I love helping people and have been doing so now for 45 years.
