Juneteenth Celebration in the Garden:  Saturday, June 18
10 a.m.-2 p.m. (5-Adult) Join us for a Juneteenth celebration in the garden to honor the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Celebrate and gather as a family to reflect on the past and look to the future. Guest speakers Teri Speight and Abra Lee will discuss the past, present and future of Black garden clubs in Virginia, and environmental educator Maya Alexander will highlight the benefits of natural spaces for the Black community. Enjoy a mini-Farmer’s Market and activity tables for children. After lunch, join a garden walk or seed planting session. Pack a picnic or preorder from local restaurant, Granddaddy’s Skillet. All attendees (including children) must be registered, and children must be accompanied by an adult. $10 per person, free for children 5-15 years old. Code IKD.3NXW. Summer Concert in the Garden:  Tuesday, June 28
6-8 p.m. (All ages) Every summer, the Friends of Green Spring (FROGS) extend a special welcome to families in the community by hosting a free concert in the garden. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, pack a picnic dinner to enjoy on the lawn, and kick back to hear lively music. Bring the children at 5:30 p.m. to learn about frogs, hear frog stories, enjoy art projects, and participate in games. Have your picture taken with Ribbit the frog! Annual Begonia Show:  Saturday, August 20, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m.and Sunday, August 21, 12–3:30 p.m.
(Adults) Feast your eyes on this show sponsored by the Potomac branch of the American Begonia Society. Be tempted with splashes of color and shapes for homes, terrariums and greenhouses that last long after frosts have put our outdoor gardens to bed. The sale offers a wide variety of begonias, including tropical and subtropical species. Free. For more information, call Green Spring at 703-642-5173.

Historic Green SpringTea & Tasting ProgramsTea Treats at Historic House Teas

A traditional English afternoon tea served in the 1784 Historic House follows each program. Full tea includes finger sandwiches, pastries, and scone with cream and jam. Specially prepared tea boxes to go are also available with advance purchase.

Moon Magic
1-3 p.m. (Adults) June’s full moon is the strawberry moon and a super-moon. The Moon is an object of enduring fascination. Explore its many incarnations throughout history, including deity, feminine symbol, and green cheese! Consider the moon’s influence on human behavior, from “lunar lunacy” to its intimate connection with women. $38 (lecture + tea); $15 (lecture only).

Garden Tour and Ice Cream
10-11:30 a.m. (Adults) Tour the vibrant summer gardens with a Green Spring Master Gardener docent. Summer Garden Tour and Tea
1-3 p.m. (Adults) Take a walking tour of the glorious summer demonstration gardens with a Green Spring Master Gardener docent. Afterwards, relax over afternoon tea in the Historic House. $38 per person.

Juneteenth: Jane Austen and Slavery
1-3 p.m. (Adults) What were Jane Austen’s views on slavery? Recent “historical interrogation” research has provided new details about Austen family ties to colonialism and the slave trade. Hear about exhibit updates at the Jane Austen House Museum in England that will reflect historical context, and consider what Jane’s writings, tastes, and connections may reveal about her sentiments on the issue. $38 (lecture + tea); $15 (lecture only).

Superstition
1-3 p.m. (Adults) Superstitions are present in all human societies. Discover the origins and rationale of believing in the unbelievable across centuries and cultures. Hear fascinating stories behind common superstitions and discover that tea is steeped in superstition. Learn to be careful how you drink it. $38 (lecture + tea); $15 (lecture only).

Souvenirs: Tchotchkes or Treasures?
1-3 p.m. (Adults) Knickknacks and sentimental mementos of vacations are tangible memory keepers that preserve the past. Discover the origins of “tourist art” and consider souvenirs as historical storytellers, from ancient relics and keepsakes to t-shirts and key chains! Take home a souvenir of Historic Green Spring. $38 (lecture + tea); $15 (lecture only).

Banned!
1-3 p.m. (Adults) Since antiquity, works of art have been censored. Discover how every art form has been subject to suppression: books, songs, paintings, movies, cartoons and more. See how censorship changes with the times with bans imposed in the past that surprise and amuse us today. $38 (lecture + tea); $15 (lecture only).

Watercolor Workshop – Landscapes
9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (16-Adult) Artist Dawn Flores helps you translate the beauty of nature into a watercolor painting by showing how to paint skies, trees, water, mountains and rocks. Learn strategies for building depth and focus in your work using color and value. Get techniques for building texture and masking to preserve the white of the page. Floral Design Workshop - Summer Bouquet
1-2:30 p.m. (16-Adult) Create a beautiful summer flower arrangement with the help of certified floral designer Betty Ann Galway. Learn how to properly care for and handle flowers along with learning creative design ideas. Register for both the class and the supply fee. Melt-and-Pour Soapmaking Workshop
10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (16-Adult) Learn the basics of making melt-and-pour soap. Instructor Judy Zatsick will demonstrate how to get creative with soap bases, natural vs. created fragrances, and colorants and additives including mica, embeds, botanicals and exfoliants. Get familiar with molds, curing and packaging ideas. Take home two bars of soap, a silicone mold, soap recipes, and the knowledge to start creating your own melt-and-pour soap! $75 per person. Watercolor Workshop – Mosaics

Native Plants for Pollinators
10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. (Adults) Help Green Spring Gardens celebrate National Pollinator Week! Join Laura Beaty, horticulture chair of the Virginia Native Plant Society, as she discusses the vast variety of local pollinators that evolved with the native flowering plants of Northern Virginia. Plus, explore the many native plants growing at Green Spring Gardens to see our local pollinators at work and learn why we need to protect them. Eco-Gardening Ideas Evening Stroll at Green Spring
5:30-7 p.m. (Adults) Take an evening stroll through the gardens at Green Spring with curatorial horticulturist Brenda Skarphol to see eco-friendly and sustainable garden ideas. Learn how to incorporate native plants that will attract more pollinators and wildlife to your garden, and ways to improve your soil for better water retention and to manage runoff. Backyard Composting Basics
10-11:30 a.m. (Adults) Mother Nature can help you compost plant material into luscious amendment for your lawn and garden. All About Figs
10 a.m.-12 p.m. (Adults) For millions of years, fig trees have shaped our world, influenced our evolution, nourished our bodies, and fed our imaginations. Join Dr. Jafar Vossoughi as he presents a comprehensive coverage of this small, unusual fruit, including its history, botany, biology and the cultivars suitable for our region. Garden Tour - Green Spring Up and Down
10-11:30 a.m. (Adults) Extension Master Gardener docents lead a “Grand Tour” of Green Spring! View upper demonstration gardens, then take the garden path less travelled to explore the naturalistic lower garden areas: the Virginia Native Plant Garden, woodland stream valley, and ponds. Tour involves a steep slope with loose gravel. $15 per person. Code 8A0.9W3D.

How to Prune Hydrangeas
10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. (Adults) There are many reasons to prune a hydrangea: for size, to remove deadwood and spent blooms, and to improve the overall vigor of your plant. But different types of hydrangeas require different pruning times and techniques. Join horticulturist Susan Eggerton for a walk through Green Spring Gardens and a hands-on pruning session. Learn how to identify different hydrangeas and why their differences impact how you prune. You will come away with more pruning confidence and a future of beautiful hydrangeas. Yoga for Gardeners I
9:30-10:25 a.m. (Adults) This class features a gentle introduction to the Vinyasa method which helps participants increase the strength, flexibility and endurance necessary for gardening. Private Garden Tours 
Schedule a private group tour led by Green Spring Extension Master Gardener docents who interpret the gardens, the plant collections, the site’s mission, and its historic legacy. $10 per person for groups of 20 or more; $12 per person for 19 or fewer. Private Tea Programs 
Private groups may reserve a lecture or garden tour followed by a traditional English afternoon tea served in the 1784 Historic House. Minimum group size is 18. For information call Historic Green Spring at 703-941-7987. 

ChooseYour Nature Walk 
(All ages) Book a walk with one of our Children’s Education teachers and choose from a variety of topics for the themed tour of the park. Each tour will include a hands-on element and can be customized to include the science topics your students are learning in school. Choose one of the following topics: Pond Fauna & Flora, Native VA Plants & Trees, Watersheds & Geology of Green Spring, VA Ecosystems Walk, History of Green Spring as a Farm, or General Garden Tour. $45 per group of up to 9 people, including at least one adult. Fill out our web form, contact Elizabeth Waugh at elizabeth.waugh@fairfaxcounty.gov, or call Green Spring Gardens at (703) 642-5173.
