Saturday, September 17 - Family Fall Festival & Plant Sale
9 a.m.-3 p.m. (All ages) Join us at Green Spring Gardens for the annual Family Fall Festival! The festival will have activities for the entire family, including classes for children and adults, a silent auction, a book sale, and a bake sale. Saturday, October 29 - Garden Symposium - Urban Gardening and Design 101
9 a.m.-12 p.m. (Adults) Do you have a small space but big garden dreams? In this half-day symposium, turn your growing dreams into reality and learn how to build a gorgeous and unique garden that showcases your personal style, while still being functional and productive. Presenters Kathy Jentz and Teri Speight share tips and tricks from their new book, “The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City,” to bring style and practicality into your own garden. $62 per person. Learn strategies for building depth and focus in your work using color and value. Get techniques for building texture and masking to preserve the white of the page. 10-11:30 a.m. (16-Adult) Enjoy the flowers of late summer in this floral design workshop. Certified floral designer Betty Ann Galway walks you through this jewel-toned arrangement for your home. Saturday, October 22 - Watercolor Workshop - Botanicals
9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (16-Adult) For the beginner or advanced student, this in-person workshop teaches watercolor techniques through exercises that help you understand color and composition, and improve brush control. Artist Dawn Flores teaches you about paper, paint, drawing and transfer techniques used in botanical art. Basic drawing skills are helpful for drawing the plant specimen from which to paint an elegant botanical portrait. A supply list will be emailed before class. Bring a lunch. $102 per person.
Saturday, November 12 - Watercolor Workshop - Yippee Yupo!
9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (16-Adult) Forget everything you know about painting on paper and enjoy the spontaneity of painting on a plastic surface such as yupo. Artist Marni Maree will teach you how to create various textures as you paint and ‘unpaint’ your subject using your regular watercolor supplies. A supply list will be emailed before class. Saturday, September 3 - Forest Bathing Walk in the Gardens
10 a.m.-12 p.m. (Adults) Experience Green Spring Gardens with all of your senses. Join Ana Ka’ahanui, co-founder of local nonprofit Capital Nature for a slow, meditative walk around the gardens. Contemplative, but more active than meditation, this forest bathing walk will help reduce blood pressure, boost immunity, and enhance mood and creativity. Saturday, September 10 - Edible Garden Tour
10-11:30 a.m. (16-Adult) Explore the bounty of Green Spring’s Edible Garden with an Extension Master Gardener docent who showcases many food plants – from vegetables to fruit trees – suitable for home landscapes. Saturday, September 10 - Fall Tasks for a Great Garden
1-2:30 p.m. (Adults) Don’t fall behind on fall gardening! Join Green Spring staff on a walk of the gardens as they highlight weeds and invasive plants to remove from your garden. Sunday, September 11 - Flight of the Hummingbird
12:30-1:30 p.m. (Adults) Last year, a rogue rufous hummingbird spent the winter at Green Spring Gardens. Why did this one bird defy the regular migration pattern? Learn all about hummingbirds with amateur ornithologist Larry Cartwright. Take a close look at the ruby-throated hummingbird, the only species that breeds in the eastern United States and discuss some vagrants that might show up this fall and winter. Discover how hummingbirds consume nectar and regulate their metabolism, and the dazzling array of male hummingbird plumages used in courtship. Saturday, September 24 - Saving Garden Treasures - Taking Plant Cuttings
10-11:30 a.m. (Adults) Learn how to propagate plants from cuttings following simple techniques demonstrated by Green Spring staff. Gain strategies to overwinter your favorite tender perennials so you can add them to your garden next year and save money. Saturday, October 1 - Culinary Herbs - A Bakers Dozen
10:30-11:30 a.m. (Adults) Horticulturist Peggy Riccio teaches you how to grow a dozen culinary herbs. For each herb, discover the best time and method to start, cultural requirements, harvesting and preserving techniques, and methods for using them in the kitchen. View some upper demonstration gardens, then take the garden path less travelled to explore the naturalistic lower garden areas: the Virginia Native Plant Garden, woodland stream valley and ponds. Wednesday, September 7 - Chanticleer Gardens, Wayne, PA
7 a.m.-7 p.m. (Adults) For garden lovers, Chanticleer in Wayne, Pennsylvania is not to be missed. With 35 acres of dynamic and creative garden displays, it is a beautiful blend of art and horticulture. Trip departs from Green Spring Gardens at 7 a.m. and returns at 7 p.m. Trip cancellation deadline: Aug. 24, 2022. Includes motor coach, admission, guided tour and lunch. $139 per person.
Wednesday, December 7 - Longwood Gardens Getaway
11 a.m.-11 p.m. (Adults) Let the holiday season begin! Longwood Gardens’ holiday wonderland sparkles with more than 500,000 twinkling lights, spectacular performing fountains, festive floral displays, and live music. Meals are BYO or at the site cafe. 1-3 p.m. (Adult) Tea is regarded as England’s quintessential drink, but Scots played important roles in tea-drinking history. Travel north of the border to explore Scottish afternoon tea and what it reveals about the country’s culture and traditions. Saturday, October 8 - Hidden History in Quilts
1-2:30 p.m. (Adults) Explore the hidden history revealed in quilts inspired by Native American and Indigenous culture and lifeways. “History Outside the Box” historian and storyteller T. Carter displays a selection of beautiful star quilts that tell stories passed down by oral tradition. Joe Gaines from the Choctaw Nation provides traditional singing, drumming and a fun dance lesson! 1-3:30 p.m. (Adult) Artist and collector Caroline Hottenstein displays antique lace items and lace-making tools and explains how this luxury fabric has been used as a fashionable adornment for centuries. Sunday, November 20 - Thanksgiving Tea: Cranberry Cornucopia
1-3 p.m. (Adult) Bring a cornucopia of cranberry knowledge to your Thanksgiving table! We’ll tell the fascinating story of this colorful, versatile and nutritious American fruit, and clear up misconceptions about how it grows. Private Garden Tours
Schedule a private group tour led by Green Spring Extension Master Gardener docents who interpret the gardens, the plant collections, the site’s mission, and its historic legacy. $10 per person for groups of 20 or more; $12 per person for 19 or fewer. Private Tea Programs

Choose Your Nature Walk
(All ages) Book a walk with one of our Children’s Education teachers and choose from a variety of topics for the themed tour of the park. Each tour will include a hands-on element and can be customized to include the science topics your students are learning in school. Choose one of the following topics: Pond Fauna & Flora, Native VA Plants & Trees, Watersheds & Geology of Green Spring, VA Ecosystems Walk, History of Green Spring as a Farm, or General Garden Tour. $45 per group of up to 9 people, including at least one adult.
